Wilderness on your Doorstep

Meanwood Valley Partnership and Leeds City Council and have been successful in obtaining a grant of £65,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a joint project that will help people to discover and protect the rich heritage and natural diversity along the Meanwood Valley. Starting in February and led by the Leeds City Council Ranger Service, it will last for 30 months and cover all of the Meanwood Valley.

The Meanwood Valley has long been celebrated as a ‘green artery’ from the centre of urban Leeds to the rural countryside. It has an extensive range of habitats and a wealth of biodiversity. The project will promote an understanding of the wildlife and its management by providing opportunities for local communities to get involved through an exciting programme of volunteer activity, wildlife surveys, Bioblitzes and other public events.  It will use new and innovative methods of interpretation, mobile apps, web content and education.

By encouraging as wide a range of people as possible to celebrate this wilderness on their doorstep we aim to ensure its conservation into the future; because, in the words of David Attenborough,

“No one will protect what they don’t care about, and no one will care about what they have never experienced”

Most of the funding will be spent on employing a Ranger part time for two years to deliver the activities, recruit volunteers and coordinate a range of volunteer activities. ‘Friends of’ groups along the Valley will be involved too and meet regularly to review the project.

Congratulations and thanks to Senior Ranger Daniel Malster and MVP’s Janet Matthews for all their hard work in putting the successful bid together. Janet said:

“We would love to thank National Lottery players for giving us this opportunity to celebrate the wonderful Meanwood Valley and the wealth of wildlife that is found here”

We will keep people posted with regular updates on our website and other social media.
