Christmas Lights Switch On
Every year we organise the popular Christmas Light Switch-On in Meanwood. This year it has been set for Monday November 13th starting at 6.00pm, and everyone is invited to attend.
The choir from Meanwood Church of England Primary School will perform a selection of carols in the square in front of Asda on Green Road from 6pm. The Meanwood Institute‘s Ukulele group will then play a selection of songs after the switch on at 6.30pm. Complimentary mulled wine and mince pies will be served by Alfred‘s bar and the Myrtle Tavern and shops around the square will add to the atmosphere by staying open till 7pm for Christmas shopping.
Organiser, Sue Sheard says “The lights switch on is a lovely community event brightening up what can be a dark and dismal time of year. As well as the lights allocated to us by the council, last year we commissioned our own motif and also held a competition with children at Meanwood Church of England Primary School to design another, which we funded. We’ll be holding a design competition again this year with children at St Urban’s Catholic Primary School.
It’s great that The Myrtle Tavern and Holy Trinity Church got involved and commissioned their own designs too and we’re hoping more local businesses will do the same in future years to help us bring some seasonal light and colour to the village centre.”
