Christmas Lights Switch On
Every year we organise the popular Christmas Light Switch-On in Meanwood. This year it was on Monday November 13th in the square in front of Asda on Green Road and we had a fantastic turnout to enjoy the event.
The choir from Meanwood Church of England Primary School performed a selection of carols and the Meanwood Institute‘s Ukulele group played a selection of songs after the switch on. Complimentary mulled wine and mince pies were provided and served by Alfred‘s bar and the Myrtle Tavern and shops around the square added to the atmosphere by staying open later.
Organiser, Sue Sheard said
“The lights switch on is a lovely community event brightening up what can be a dark and dismal time of year. As well as the lights allocated to us by the council, last year we commissioned our own motif and also held a competition with children at Meanwood Church of England Primary School to design another, which we funded. We’re holding a design competition again for 2018 with children at St Urban’s Catholic Primary School, which we will again be funding.
It’s great that The Myrtle Tavern and Holy Trinity Church got involved and commissioned their own designs too and we’re hoping more local businesses will do the same in future years to help us bring some more seasonal light and colour to the village centre.”
